When testing a telephone cable, you should be careful - unlike an Ethernet network, where the maximum voltage cannot be more than 5V, the voltage in the telephone network at rest is 50V, and during a call it can reach 110V. If we look at the circuitry of the receiver, we can find that there is no protection against high voltage on the board, and the logic chips CD4017BP and CD4066BM located next to the cable connectors are designed for a maximum voltage of 18V, which is safe when connecting an Ethernet cable, but not a telephone one. .
