Hygrometer (humidity sensor) - a measuring device designed to determine the humidity of air and other gases. They are used in microclimate systems, humidity control of industrial, warehouse and household premises, control of the composition of protective atmospheres, etc.

Electronic hygrometers can use different principles:
  • optoelectronic - measure the dew point using a cooled mirror (the mirror is cooled to a temperature known to be below the dew point temperature, then slowly heats up to the dew point temperature);
  • capacitive - measure the change in the capacitance of a polymer or metal oxide capacitor caused by moisture absorption (their measurement range is from 5 to 95 relative percent, they are subject to readings drifting due to aging, but their readings are almost independent of temperature);
  • conductometric or resistive - use the effect of changing the electrical conductivity of some hygroscopic salts or electrically conductive polymers, depending on humidity;
  • piezoelectric - their principle of operation is based on a change in the frequency of mechanical vibrations of a piezoelectric plate, for example, a quartz crystal with a film deposited on it reversibly absorbing-desorbing moisture substance, when moisture is absorbed, the mass of the film increases, which reduces the frequency of vibrations of the electromechanical system, the vibrations in which are supported by the electronic autogenerator;
  • measuring air conductivity (measure absolute humidity, temperature measurement is also required to calculate relative humidity)
