The SC8108 twisted pair tester is designed to test the health of cable networks and STP/UTP twisted pair telephone lines, coaxial cable and telephone line. To connect a coaxial cable and a telephone line, you must additionally use RJ45-BNC and RJ45-RJ11 adapters. Adapters are not included in the tester's delivery set and must be purchased separately.
The SC8108 tester provides determination of the length of the measured section or the distance to the break.
The instrument consists of a main main active unit and a remote transponder. The active unit has the main "MAIN" (M) and loopback (return) "LOOPBACK" (L) jacks for connecting the tested cable with an RJ-45 connector. The passive unit has an RJ-45 jack for the remote end (R).
SC8108 Cable Tester Features
locating the connection error (10% of the cable length from the beginning, the middle part or 10% of the end)
determining the cable length and distance to the break
dynamic cable length calibration and conducting measurements with an accuracy of 97%
Note: The tester cannot determine the exact location of the short circuit.
WARNING! Do not use in active network with equipment connected at one end of the cable!
The tester is a monoblock 180x80x40 mm in size with a liquid crystal display (without backlight), under which there are four control buttons: power, move up the menu, confirm/return, move down in the menu.
There are two RJ-45 sockets in the upper end of the case.
The MAIN (M) port is the main port, the LOOPBACK (L) port is the response port through which you can "ring" patch cords.
The tester is powered by four AAA batteries.
The tester automatically turns off after 30 minutes if not in use.
The mating part is a small 75x31 mm box with an RJ-45 port and a built-in speaker. By the frequency of the speaker squeak, you can determine the integrity of the wire and the correctness of the pinout. The response part has its own identifier ID1. Up to eight such terminal devices can be used. Accordingly, IDs will be from 1 to 8. Terminal devices must be purchased separately.
SC8108 is the cheapest cable tester at the moment with the ability to measure cable length. It is quite suitable for testing a new network and troubleshooting an old network.
Description of the SC8108 main menu:
WireMap - checking and determining the wiring of the cable wiring diagram, by ports M, L, R and error location.
Pair&Length - pair and length measurement, used to check and determine the length of the cable, the distance to breaks, connections and intersections of pairs.
Coax/Tel - measurement of the length of the coaxial cable and telephone line, used to check and indicate an open circuit, short circuit. At this point, you can test a telephone or coaxial line using special adapters. Testing takes place between pins 4 and 5.
Setup - calibration and initial setup of the tester. Allows you to change from metric to feet and calibrate.
SC8108 Specifications

A 5m patch cord is required to calibrate the instrument. You do not need to connect a terminal device for calibration.
Go to the “Setup” menu item and select the “Calibration” item. The device will ask for confirmation “Calibration?”, Press “Yes”.
The device will show the measured length in meters. Using the buttons labeled as plus and minus on the screen, adjust the length value to 5 and then press OK.
The device is calibrated.
After calibration, select the Pair&Length menu item and see that the device has measured the length patch cord and determined it to be 5 meters.
Why calibrate? Cables from different manufacturers and different types have different characteristics. Therefore, if you need the most accurate readings, it is better to calibrate the device.
Calibration fails after power off the instrument. Therefore, you need to calibrate each time you turn it on. Calibration is needed if you need to measure the distance to the break or the length of the wire. In other cases, it is not necessary to calibrate the device.
